Back on the Track 5 x 1000m with 400m Recovery

Tonight coach Marino had 5 x1000m planned for me.  He wanted this fairly intense as we have a race planned on the weekend so will not be hammering again this week.  I really have not had a good track workout yet in this build up to the Maccabi Games.  I generally have not had much zip and have certainly not felt strong.  Again, the Speedsters were kind enough to let me run my workout during their time at the track.  As CR South is still being used by CYO Track the Speedsters have been using the track at New Hope, PA which is a beautiful track although it is a bit of a drive to get there.

I got to the track about 6:10 after a long day at work.  My warm up felt a bit sluggish but I felt ready for this even after a solid 17 on Sunday and a solid 8+ yesterday.  So after the warm up I stretch a bit got in a few striders and went into the first one.    The thing that is tough for me is I keep settling into a pace that is too slow.  I need to give myself a mental push to keep the pace solid.  The first one was a bit slow but significantly faster than the last time I did 1000’s.  The second one was 4 seconds faster which I was happy with.  The third and 4th I again left the pace lapse.  I was not too slow but slowed off the pace of the second one.  The last one I found there was more in the tank that I thought and the pace picked back up.  I felt strong and was more striding the last one than really killing it.  There was more in the tank tonight which is encouraging.  It also tells me I am getting more physically fit but I need to work on my toughness on the track.  I sometimes can feel myself downshift.  I really need to work on keeping the intensity and pushing through the discomfort.  The fitness is coming around for sure but my mental toughness is lagging although tonight was an improvement.  Doing 1000’s by yourself is tough but I think it is helping me re-learn to push..  I just need to practice keeping the accelerator down!

After the 1000’s I ran a cool down on the track and then had a recovery bar as soon as I got to my car.  I am hoping being smarter about my nutrition is also going to start paying dividends.  When I got home I did a stability ball push up routine and then finally had a few minutes of family time before I had to get the kids to bed…

Leave for Israel in 49 days.  The opening ceremony is in 51 days and the Maccabiah Half marathon is in 55 days…   Less than 8 weeks to go now…
